Chinese Herbs
Nancy is also trained and experienced in Chinese Herbs. Chinese Herbology is somewhat more complex than other forms of herbology in that Chinese herbs are rarely prescribed as a single herb but, rather, are combined in a formula. A formula may consist of anywhere from 2 to 20 different single herbs. Some Chinese herbal formulas are available over the counter at health food stores, but the best way to take herbs is by consulting someone trained in this modality. Formulas are custom made for each individual based on the person’s signs, symptoms, health history and constitution.
Taste, texture, etc.
Chinese herbs can be taken in various forms: raw, pills, powders, tinctures and capsules. Many people have heard that Chinese herbs do not taste good – unfortunately, that can sometimes be true!! The good news is that if they are taken in pill or capsule form, taste is not a factor. Convenience is also a factor in deciding how someone will take herbs. Some people have busy schedules that do not accommodate the time it takes to mix the herbs with boiling water. Again, capsules, pills and even some tinctures can alleviate this problem. Other people enjoy the ritual of mixing the herbs and drinking them as a tea, so powdered herbs work better for them. You and I can decide together what might work best for you.
Cost and Safety
Recent news stories have a lot of us concerned about products coming from China. While the herbs I use in my practice are grown in China and shipped from there, I only do business with companies that guarantee GMP controls that meet US standards as well. In addition, while the herbs I dispense are not organically grown, they are free of metals and other additives. You can be assured of getting safe, high quality herbs from an experienced and conscientious practitioner!
Herbs are generally cost effective and can be taken as a therapy by themselves or in combination with acupuncture treatments. The cost of herbs is determined by the amount and kind you need to take. Again, this is a decision you and I will reach to determine the most efficient way to provide relief from your symptoms.
